As February draws to a close, in comes March and (hopefully) spring, and with all of these things comes Match Day! Whether you're a student celebrating your own residency match on match day or celebrating the achievements of your friends and classmates, we at the Hirsh Leisure Lounge have selected a number of books to get you into the spirit, ranging from histories of medicine to personal accounts of doctors, to amusing books about fictional doctors. 

American Sirens by Kevin Hazzard (the story of the first pioneering group of Black paramedics)

Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder (the life of Paul Farmer, infectious disease doctor known for his work with Ebola)

The Queen of All Poisons by BJ Magnani (a mystery about a Boston doctor who solves crimes)

The Doctors Blackwell by Janice Nimura (a history of the Blackwell sisters, the first female doctors in the United States)

The Empathy Exams by Leslie Jamison (a collection of essays from a former professional patient)

The Scalpel and the Silver Bear by Lori Arviso Alvord (a memoir from the first Navajo woman surgeon)

Better by Atul Gawande (meditations on the practice of medicine and the ethics involved)

Rough Sleepers by Tracy Kidder (a biography of the life of Dr. Jim O'Connell, a doctor who cares for the homeless population of Boston)

The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris (the dawn of surgery in the Victorian age and the surgeon who worked to improve it)

Black Man in a White Coat by Damon Tweedy (a memoir about race and being Black in medical school)

Joan is Okay by Weike Wang (a novel about a young Chinese ICU nurse reckoning with an epidemic)
