Six months earlier than expected, the NIH Public Access Policy (2024) has recently been revised to require peer-reviewed manuscripts that arise from NIH-funded research, accepted for publication on or after July 1, 2025, be made publicly available in PubMed Central upon publication.
The 2024 Public Access Policy is in keeping with the White House 2022 OSTP memo Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research and no longer allows for a 1-year embargo on public access. While that is the most major change in policy, it should also be noted that the new policy utilizes a standard license based on the Government Use License and also changed the definition of Official Date of Publication to the date when the article is first made available in final, edited form, whether print or electronic.
Please join us on Zoom for the Updated NIH Public Access Policy workshop on June 2 2025, 11am-noon, for more information. We’ll walk through the changes in policy in more detail and how the Hirsh Health Sciences Library can help support compliance.
