Eligible library users may borrow library material from the 4th floor Library Service Desk in the Medical Education building. A current Tufts University ID or Tufts Medical Center ID is required to check out materials.
Borrowing Policies
Materials may be recalled if not returned on time. Any infractions of borrowing policies will result in temporary suspension to borrowing privileges. Overdue items will be considered lost, and a replacement fee will be charged unless the item is returned. All patrons must adhere to our borrowing policies.
Items Available for Checkout and Loan Periods
The following items are available for checkout and may be found using JumboSearch.

† Current and older print journals are for library use only out but scanning is available.
* If you check out an overnight item on a Friday after 4pm or on the weekend, the due date is the following Monday at 9am.
Please note that no equipment will be loaned 1 hour before closing. In order to check out materials, a Materials Borrowing Agreement must be signed. Additionally, users must adhere to all University Policies, may not violate any Digital Copyright Laws, and should never leave equipment unattended. Tufts University is not responsible for any files left on laptops. The installation of file sharing software is not allowed. The borrower will be charged for damage or loss of item.
Requesting Items for Check Out
Students, faculty, and staff are able to request books from any Tufts library to be picked up at Hirsh Library when the Service Desk is open.
Locate the desired book in the library catalog and click on "Sign in for more requesting options" button located in the yellow box under "Get It." Log in with either your Tufts username and password or account email address, and click on the request button next to the item you would like to receive. Fill out the short form and indicate the desired pick up location and date needed by. To submit this form and complete the request, click "Request." After clicking on "Request", the screen will update to verify that the request has been placed. Depending on the lending library, delivery usually take 3-5 business days. Patrons will receive an email when their book is ready for pick up at the library service desk. You will have a week to pick up your item. If you do not pick up your books within a week, they will get checked back in and returned to the owning library. Other Tufts libraries may have different pick-up procedures, so if you choose to pick up at a different library, you will want to contact them for information.

Checking Out Library Books
We have two ways to check out books at Hirsh Health Sciences Library:
- Library Service Desk
- Come by the Library Service Desk to check out books during business hours.
- MeeScan (Self-Checkout)
- When at the Library, download the app from the App Store or Google Play
- Scan the barcode on your Tufts University ID (starts with 29090) or log in with your Tufts University username and password

After finding a book in our collection, tap the plus sign (+) and scan the Tufts Library book barcode (found inside front, first page or so, top right corner and it starts with 39090)
Borrowing Books by Mail
You may also choose to have a book from a Tufts library be mailed to you. Locate the desired book in the library catalog and click on “Sign in for more requesting options” button located in the yellow box under “Get It.” Login with either your Tufts username and password or account email address, and click on the request button next to the item you would like to receive. Fill out the short form, and using the dropdown arrow under “Pickup Location,” select “Home Address.” To submit this form and complete the request, click “Request.” After clicking on “Request,” the screen will update to verify that the request has been placed.
Mail delivery of Hirsh books is limited to the United States. If you are not in the United States, please email us at hhslcirc@tufts.edu to discuss your needs. Each Tufts library has their own mail policies. Please refer to the specific library for instructions.
Renewing Books
Books available for check out can be renewed twice. You can renew your books twice by logging into your library account or contacting us.
- Access My Account, by clicking "Login" at the upper right of JumboSearch, then select "My Account".
- Sign in with your Tufts University Username and Password or Email address attached to your account.
- To renew an item, select the title of the item under "Loans", then click on "Renew".
- To renew all library items checked out, click on “Renew All”.
Renewing Anatomical Models, Reserve Items, and Technology Equipment
You must come to the 4th floor Library Service Desk to renew anatomical models, reserve items, and technology equipment. This material can be renewed one time, provided there are other copies still available for check out. During heavy use periods, you may not be able to renew a reserve item due to demand.
Returning Library Books
If you are on campus, please return your books to the Library Service Desk. If the Desk is closed, please put the books in the book return bin to the left of the Library Service Desk, next to the elevator.
You may also return books to the other Tufts Libraries: Tisch Library, Ginn Library, Music, or SMFA. Please check their websites or contact them to confirm their return policy.
