Determining Your Rights

An original work is automatically copyrighted when it is fixed in a tangible medium of expression and no other steps are necessary to initiate your copyright.

If you signed an agreement with a publisher or other contractor regarding your work, but are unsure of what you forfeited or negotiated in that agreement, ask us and we can help make sense of the legal contract.  If you are not able to find a copy of the agreement you may need to contact the contractor directly.  For journal articles, SHERPA/RoMEO, a database of publisher copyright policies, may provide information about what the publisher usually permits.
